Spirit of Powwow is organised into 21 chapters covering everything from the area setup, the Grand Entry, native dance categories and special ceremonies, on to the drumming and singing. The book also describes the old traditions and how they have shifted over time while still retaining the original spirituality. It discusses the important positions such as the Master of Ceremonies, Arena Director and Whipman through to the Head Dancers and on to the Royalty and Judges. The book covers most forms of northern dance at a Powwow, including fancy shawl, traditional, hoop, etc. and includes many photos.

Five Appendices cover in highlight form, etiquette do’s and don’ts, the judging point systems for dancers, scoring for both the native American Dance and the drumming and singing. There is also a bibliography.

Both editions are 144 pages long and contain 173 colour photos, 21 original line drawings and 15 black and white photos.  All of the photos in the book and on the site, were taken by Kay unless other wise noted.  All original illustrations are by Susanne Lansonius.
